Let us give thanks

I pray that the Lord gives you the eyes to see all the blessings He has poured out upon you throughout the years. May He also give you a mouth that gives thanks for everything. May He give you ears to hear the whispers of His love and goodness.

In this time, please don't forget our Lord. Don't forget the great kindness that He has shown.

Even amidst all the talk of turkey, mashed potatoes and yummy Thanksgiving foods...please remember. Look back to the cross and remember the sacrifice. Remember the blood that has been shed. Remember the mercy and redemption that now covers you. Don't ever forget.

Give thanks this season to the One who has given the greatest gift of all. His life.

Who ate the bananas?

We have a mystery on our hands...

Last night there were two very ripe bananas set out on the counter awaiting their death to banana bread.

When dawn broke they had disappeared. Almost completely.

No trace except for these...

I had to scratch my head, but only for a moment.

I was looking in another direction.

I believe I was looking at the guilty suspect...

Yeah. I was definitely looking at the suspect. But was I looking at the guilty?

...I think so...

This little lady has a track record. She's got dirt on her file.

We have evidence of previous mischief.

DD stands for dumpster diver

I believe the story is pretty black and white.

There were two bananas...there are no longer two bananas...there are only remnants on the living room carpet...and there is a guilty dog peering out from the depths of her kennel at me.

One question plagues me and my husband...

What dog eats a whole banana?!?!?!

Phoebe. She is a dog with secrets. I can't really say a lot more than that!

I shall never have absolute proof as to the guilty in this case...

...but I am definitely leaning in one direction.

Yes, Phoebe, I am talking about you.

Case closed.

Thunderstorms

A storm passed through last night. The winds were strong and the rain came down rather heavily. The thunder periodically interrupted the sound of the rain next to our bedroom window. The lightning flashed every so often reminding me of how awesome God is.
The sound of the wind and rain often lulls me to sleep, which I love. I have always been a fan of thunderstorms. My dad and mom would make sure that the four of "us kids" were not afraid of them. We would all troop out onto the front porch of our old farmhouse and watch the beauty of the lightning and the power of the thunder. my parents would talk about the might of God and the amazing power He created when I formed the elements.

I guess I mainly write this to tell you about my love for the beauty and power of God's creation and for the teaching that my parent gave me while I was under their roof. They were always intentional about the way they taught my siblings and I. They wanted us to have a healthy fear of God and also a respect for His amazing creation. When I say, "healthy fear", I'm not saying they tried to scare it into us! They brought God's word to the table and lead us in truth and hope in Christ.

Blessings,
Rachel

My Two Year Old

This, my dear readers...this is Phoebe.

My mischievous two year old....

She seems to think that she is queen of the house, ruler of the apartment complex, duchess of the windowsill, and ultimately closest and dearest friend of the garbage can, which has brought on the nick name "DD", standing for dumpster diver.

She definitely has it in her head that she is a person too. Her questions and thoughts seem to be:

"Why can't I eat that too????"

"Wait a second, I only see two of those. Where is mine?"

"So...I get to sleep out here in this cold, dark, damp and stinky cage and y'all get to sleep on the bed....nice...I feel so sad. I guess I'll go comfort myself with a nibble from the trash can."

"Can't you see? I am shriveling into a pile of bones. I really want need that piece of chicken!"

"Look deep into my eyes. I. THINK. I. AM. STARVING."

"What is wrong with getting a snack when I'm hungry? My tummy gets rumbley too, you know. At least I'm not picky... orange peals, tin foil, cream cartons and avocado pits seem to do the trick."

"Hmmmm...what happens if I lick this outlet???"

"Why are you getting that thing out? I can clean this up just fine, thank you. Who needs a vacuum when they have a wonderful being like me hanging around?"

She has the nose of a hound (because she is one!). She is always cleaning up crumbs under the counters and hunting down flies in the living room. I think she has resigned herself to apartment life. Instead of chasing squirrels, mice and rabbits, she now goes on the hunt for house flies. She catches them, plays with them and then...ehem...eats them.Yes, I am sorry I had to share that with you...

When I take her out in the morning I often look out the peep hole to make sure nobody is outside the door, because if they are and I open my door, Phoebe will go off like a fog horn! Most of our neighbors are aware that there is a white, gray and black dinosaur living in apartment number **.

In case you are wondering, Phoebe is two and a half years old and is a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog. The breed was bred for hog hunting and is often used for this purpose down in the marshlands of Louisiana, Georgia and Florida. They are known for their will to work. They are brave dogs and will stop at nothing when they are on the trail. The males have been known to latch onto a wild hog and not let go until they are pried off with a heavy stick. They are one of the most versatile working breeds. They have been known to be used at cattle dogs, hunting hounds, livestock guardians, sled dogs, seeing eye dogs, water rescue, search and rescue and therapy dogs. They are high energy and love to run, play and romp around. Blue eyes are characteristic of the breed as well as, green, amber, and cracked (one eye with two colors). I have enjoyed the fun of owning and raising Phoebe from a pup.

Well, that is Phoeber for you. She is actually a really sweet dog. She has her quirks though! She would give you all a big kiss on the face if she could!

Blessings,
Rachel h.

Finding Contentment

Ahhh...sitting down to write again. It seems like I have neglected this poor blog, and you my dear readers! I hope you will have grace with me! These last few weeks have been interesting and crazy, to say the least.

Life in an apartment is different than I am used to, for sure. Back home in the country we only knew one neighbor and could hardly see his house. Now (I am ashamed to say) I don't know any of my numerous neighbors, and I can see all of their front doors.

The pace is different here as well. Everyone seems so hurried. Like there is something grand to be done, somewhere exquisite to go, or someone famous to visit. back home, no one seemed rushed. The pace was easy and "It'll get done when I get around to it." I miss many things about "back home", but it is also exciting to be a part of this new culture and city. I am a farm girl at heart, so even the city couldn't drag it out of me. A few months or years here will only allow that part of me to steep and grow stronger...I think(???). But if the "farm girl" does start to fade, I guess that is what God wanted. Hello city girl!!! Right? I might as well embrace it at some point if that is what He has!

I am content here. I think. I want to be content, and I think I feel content, but it is hard to tell at times. I want to always be happy where my Lord has me. I want to bloom here, where I have been planted.

I pray every day that God creates in me a heart that can deal with any living situation and still find joy in living in His world. I want to be able to glorify him through the little things as well as the big things. In my day-to-day walk I want to always be pointing to Him in some way or another. Isn't that why I was made? Isn't that why you were made?

Even in the busy and the noise, I pray that I can see His hand working and leading me onward. Doesn't He work in all situations, at all times? Is His almighty hand stayed because I live in a strange new city or because I am in a new chapter of life? Never. His plans are true and His hand is strong. He is the Grand Weaver, the Potter, the Molder and the Maker.

"Lord, let me never forget to praise your name for what You have done. Let me never forget Your promises. Let me always lean on thee when the storms come. Help me to be grounded in You always, for there is nothing else greater or more mighty to place my hope in. Bring peace and contentment as I endeavor to settle here in the city. Show me how I might glorify You to the fullest while I am here living in this little apartment. Allow me to bloom where I am planted and give You honor by doing so. Amen."

May we all learn what it means to rest in Christ. For if we rest in Him, there our hearts find
contentment. Contentment does not spring from any outside source but rather flows directly from the heart that has been saturated in Christ.

Blessings Always,
Rachel
